Helen Grime will be the first ever guest curator at Sheffield Chamber Music Festival.
Music in the Round's nine-day festival, running from May 13-21, is held in venues around Sheffield, including the Crucible Studio Theatre. The festival began in 1984 by Peter Cropper, leader of the world-renowned Lindsay String Quartet and more recently is built around the musicians of Sheffield-based Ensemble 360 performing in a variety of chamber ensemble variations.
With Grime as guest curator, this year’s festival will have well over a third of the featured music written by female composers. Helen Grime said “It’s been a huge pleasure and honour to be guest curator. I’ve had lots of fun, working with Ensemble 360, putting together programmes of music I love, finding connections between old and new music and threading through various themes close to my heart.” Grime goes on to say “Each concert features the music of at least one female composer, including overlooked gems from the last few hundred years, as well as more recent pieces and a world premiere”
