Mark Morris Dance Group returns to the Brooklyn Academy of Music this month, presenting the New York premiere of Via Dolorosa, set to a luminous score by acclaimed American composer Nico Muhly. Performances of Via Dolorosa take place on Saturday, March 28 at 2:00 pm and 8:00 pm at BAM’s Howard Gilman Opera House.
In this evocative work, Morris choreographs a meditation on the Stations of the Cross, driven by Muhly’s compositoin The Street — a cycle of meditations for solo harp inspired by texts of poet and librettist Alice Goodman, here performed live by harpist Parker Ramsay.
Hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as “serenely shattering…a transformative rush…just one of many episodes in which Morris puts his mastery of physical expression to purposes that are both narrative and spiritual.”
The score’s hauntingly beautiful textures offer a poignant counterpoint to Morris’s choreography, which unfolds with a quiet grace and contemplative poise.
