Nico Muhly has been appointed as Composer-in-Focus at London’s Kings Place during 2027.
As part of their newly announced season entitled “Origins Unwrapped”, which brings together artists whose work is shaped by heritage, migration, community and creativity, Muhly’s music will feature prominently through the year.
In January 2027, launching his residency, Muhly joins acclaimed viol consort Fretwork and countertenor Iestyn Davies for a programme exploring the roots of his musical imagination, with music by Byrd, Ferrabosco and Purcell alongside Muhly’s own compositions, including Slow and Old Bones.
Also in January 2027, The Tallis Scholars trace a musical conversation across five centuries, pairing Phinot, Palestrina and Sheppard with three works written by Muhly especially for the ensemble over more than a decade of collaboration. This includes his substantial work No Resting Place, a setting of Lamentations, verses 1–5, which are interspersed with short fragments of interviews from the Windrush Generation.
In October 2027, Muhly’s long-term collaborators Pekka Kuusisto and the Britten Sinfonia join forces to perform his dazzling violin concerto Shrink, written for Kuusisto in 2019 and receiving its London premiere in this performance.
