Muhly's "The Shadow of the Sun" premieres in Oxford
Christ Church Cathedral Choir

On Saturday June 20, a new cantata by Nico Muhly will receive its World Premiere, performed by Christ Church Cathedral Choir, conducted by Peter Holder. The Shadow of the Sun was commissioned to mark the 500th anniversary of the founding of the choir, and is one of a number of works that Muhly is writing as the choir’s Composer in Residence.

The 20-minute, seven-movement work sets texts from 16th century writer William Gager, the hymns of Charles Wesley, and the poetry of George Herbert. It explores “how poetry, art, and especially glass can act as a membrane between the visible world and the divine”.

The concert also features works by William Harris, William Walton, John Taverner and Judith Weir.
