On September 26 2020, Athelas Sinfonietta opens the Autumn Season with a portrait concert of Anders Nordentoft. The concert will include the world premiere of Balcony, the sequel to his 2017 work Stream (also on the program), both composed for Athelas Sinfonietta. The concert will also feature the world premiere of Rumours, a work for solo piano performed by Manuel Esperilla, Flowers and Fire and Entgegen, one of Athelas’ favourites, so much so, that it has even been called the sinfonietta’s signature piece.

The concert celebrates Athelas Sinfonietta’s 30-year anniversary and the start of Anders Nordentoft’s new role as Composer in Residence for the next two years.

Anders Nordentoft’s works have been described as “refreshingly free of dogma and take direct communication as their starting point, whether through clear narrative, sensual lyricism or an almost physical impulse that seizes the attention.” Stream is “an organic, tight and rhetoric-free conversation for chamber ensemble whose velocity is determined by its own undercurrents of unease.” And when talking about Entgegen, Nordentoft talks about stories being told, “stories that remain intangible, like clouds. And if there is a program, it is one formed by the almost physical feeling that the music could reach for a thing that I had, while I composed.”

Athelas Sinfonietta is one of Denmark’s leading new music ensembles. Since 1990, they have premiered and commissioned countless works by among others Niels Rosing-Schow, Bent Sørensen and Britta Byström.

The concert will be at Koncertkirken in Copenhagen, September 26 2020, at 16:00. The conductor will be Robert Houssart.
