Part of the Ostrobothnian Contemporary Music Festival, the Oulu Sinfonia perform two premieres under conductor André de Ridder in a concert of earth-themed works this Thursday, October 15. This year's European Capital of Culture, Oulu is proud to host these terrestrial works relating to the cultural climate change initiative.
Bryce Dessner wrote his Cello Concerto Trembling Earth in 2025 for the uniquely poetic expressiveness of cellist Anastasia Kobekina. The lyrical, at times haunting dialogue between cello and orchestra is a touching tribute to Mother Nature’s boundless resilience. Over the past year the work has left its mark in Dublin, Prague, Berlin and Sydney. This will be its first performance in Scandinavia.
The American composer Ellen Reid’s new work Earth Between Oceans will also receive its European premiere in the same concert. The work races across the U.S. coastline. Combining choir, orchestra and field recordings, the piece is driven by the power of the four classical elements, leaving an unavoidable question lingering in the air: how much longer can this continue?
