This month, Carnegie Hall hosts a world premiere by Joan Tower and a portrait of Philip Glass during the ‘Juilliard at Zankel Hall’ series of concerts.

On April 6, Juilliard alumna Marin Alsop leads the Juilliard Orchestra in the first performance of its commission: Tower’s Fast Ride in a Short Machine. Tower chose a title to salute her decades-long friend, the composer John Adams, and his similarly named piece. This all-American concert also includes the Capricorn Concerto of Samuel Barber, in Carnegie’s exploration of the American experience for the country’s 250th birthday, the ‘United in Sound: America at 250’ festival.

Concluding its Zankel appearances, Juilliard celebrates the approaching 90th birthday year of Philip Glass on April 21. Nico Muhly and Nadia Sirota curate an all-Glass evening by the school’s musicians and dancers with choreography by Bobbi Jene Smith — all four artists also being Juilliard alumni.
