Detroit Opera is presenting The Handmaid's Tale by Poul Ruders with libretto by Paul Bentley, based on the acclaimed novel by Margaret Antwood, in a production running from 1-7 March 2026.
Ruders’ adaptation follows Atwood’s narrative of a fictional, totalitarian society named Gilead, translating its central themes into a musically direct and theatrically focused form. Premiered in 2000, the opera is structured in a prologue and two acts and is scored for large orchestra and chorus.
Since its premiere, the opera has been taken up by several international companies and has established a firm place in the contemporary operatic repertoire. The opera's critical exploration of themes such as human rights, democracy, and environmental degradation remains as relevant today as ever. Poul Ruders wishes to dedicate the production to the memory of Renee Nicole Good. The Detroit production is directed by Brenna Corner and conducted by Marit Strindlund.
