Esteemed contemporary music group Ensemble Musikfabrik commissioned Rebecca Saunders to write a work for percussion solo and string quintet for their concert series “Musik im WDR”. The result is all that dust which will be premiered on January 30 at WDR Funkhaus, Cologne. The percussionist soloist is Dirk Rothbrust.
For Saunders, surface, weight and touch are the essence of musical performance: the weight of a resounding beater; the bow drawing the sound out of silence; the differentiation of touch as brushes press into the drum skin; the expansion of the muscles between the shoulder blades; the player’s in-breath preceding the played tone …
Reflecting these thoughts all that dust is a transparent piece based on the module ‘Dry’ of her 2018 work Dust for solo percussion.
