The New York Times includes two major works from the Wise Music catalogue in its “Best of Classical Music 2025.”
George Lewis’ The Comet, a finalist for the 2025 Pulitzer Prize in Music, appears for its presentation in AMOC’s production of The Comet/Poppea. The Times hailed the piece as “a gem of brooding melancholy, with a slithery, anxious score,” noting that in a season where many new operas struggle alongside established masterpieces, Lewis’ work “demands a place next to Monteverdi—and earns it.”
John Corigliano's Symphony No. 1 is also recognized, following the New York Philharmonic’s September performances conducted by Gustavo Dudamel. Delivered with “absolute conviction and an almost punishing vehemence” (Alex Ross, The New Yorker), the performances reaffirmed the symphony’s enduring emotional and political force. Written in response to the AIDS crisis, the work remains one of Corigliano’s most powerful and consequential compositions.
The article additionally highlights significant Dmitri Shostakovich performances conducted by Andris Nelsons, including programs with the Boston Symphony at Carnegie Hall and the opening of a Shostakovich Festival in Leipzig with the Gewandhaus Orchestra.
