Discover a world of musical expression in a new selected list of 99 works for large ensemble. This selection of pieces for seven or more players includes icons of the twentieth century such as Stravinsky, Poulenc, Lutosławski and Carter, landmarks of the sinfonietta repertoire and works by leading composers of today, among them Nico Muhly, Judith Weir, Bent Sørensen and Augusta Read Thomas. Hidden gems include Elizabeth Maconchy’s late Romanza for viola and strings, Vagn Holmboe’s series of Preludes (to the Calm Sea, to the Pollution of Nature and many more), Ole Buck’s four Landscapes, each inspired by a season, and the effervescent Divertimento by Walter Piston.

From the swirling snow-inspired canons of Hans Abrahamsen’s Schnee and austere beauty of John Luther Adams’ In a treeless place… to the post-Romantic indulgence of Zemlinsky’s Six Songs Op. 13 and direct expression of Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Passages, the selection offers an A to Z overview of the Wise Music catalogues.
