Programme Note

The Traumwerk series began in 1995 and consists of 3 volumes, each containing 12 duos. Volume I is for two violins, Volume II violin and harpsichord and Volume III for violin and piano. The duration of the individual pieces varies but is contained within the aphoristic. The mood and character moves between the dance, the pensive, and a mixture of the two. Arditti apart, a principal inspiration for these highly varied ‘marginal’ pieces came from the exquisitely detailed marginalia with which Albrecht Dürer embellished the prayer book created in 1515 for the emperor Maximilian, and the title derives from Dürer’s comment that, “Whoever wants to do dreamwork, must mix all things together”.

Commissioned by the BBC the first performance of Traumwerk Vol. III was given at the 2002 Bath International festival by Irvine Arditti and Noriko Kawai

Dedicated to Richard Steinitz.
