The renowned and award-winning Austrian composer Friedrich Cerha would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year. Vorspiel zu einer Komödie (prologue to a comedy) was composed in 2014 but is yet to receive its premiere performance. Now, 12 years later on September 28, Graz Philharmonic Orchestra and Anna Rakitina will perform the belated world premiere.
The work is based on his Piccola Commedia for quintet and serves as an orchestral expansion of his musical ideas from the overture. After writing a lot of delicate orchestral pieces with subtle timbres, Cerha felt a longing for something “more robust, more tangible” as he described it. His Vorspiel zu einer Komödie features music that is virtuosic, entertaining, and full of surprises.
