Celebrating the centenary of iconic American artist Robert Rauschenberg, the Trisha Brown Dance Company and Merce Cunningham Trust present Dancing with Bob: Rauschenberg, Brown & Cunningham Onstage — a cross-disciplinary dance program featuring seminal works with original sets and costumes by Rauschenberg. From February 26-28, the program heads to the Brooklyn Academy of Music, with future performances at the Kampnagel in Hamburg March 12-14 and the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills May 7-9.
The program features Travelogue (1977), a rarely-seen Merce Cunningham work set to a sound collage by John Cage that layers birdsong with telephone recordings. Travelogue has been reconstructed for this tour and its Rauschenberg design features a whimsical ensemble of bicycle wheels, wooden chairs, banners, fans, tin cans, and chiffon scarves.
The Dancing with Bob tour opened in June 2025 at the American Dance Festival in Durham, NC, and continued with performances at Iowa City’s Hancher Auditorium, Boston’s Vivo Performing Arts, the PS21 Center for Contemporary Performance in Chatham, NY. This landmark project not only honors Rauschenberg’s lasting impact on contemporary art and performance but also highlights the enduring creative ties between Brown, Cunningham and Cage — a triumvirate whose collaborations helped redefine the landscape of American dance in the 20th century.
