On February 4-8, Opera Philadelphia presents the world premiere of Complications in Sue, a bold new opera featuring music by some of today’s most sought-after composers, including Missy Mazzoli and Nico Muhly.
With an original libretto by Pulitzer and Tony Award–winning playwright Michael R. Jackson (A Strange Loop), based on an idea by Justin Vivian Bond, the opera follows one woman’s life over ten decades. Each decade is set to music by a different composer, creating a richly varied portrait of Sue as she moves through time. The opera stars Justin Vivian Bond, with direction by Zack Winokur and Raja Feather Kelly, and Caren Levine conducting. Jonathan Anderson designs costumes that follow Sue through each stage of her life.
Complications in Sue was featured in the Guggenheim Museum's Works and Process series in January and includes discussion with the creative team and performances of excerpts from the opera. To learn more watch the video here.
