Spotlight on Julius Eastman, George Lewis, and Matthew Aucoin at Lincoln Center's Run AMOC* Festival
Run AMOC*

Lincoln Center’s Summer for the City presents the Run AMOC* Festival from June 18 to July 16, 2025. The festival includes 12 productions, 10 of which are New York premieres, presented by the American Modern Opera Company (AMOC*), founded by Matthew Aucoin and Zack Winokur in 2017.

George Lewis — June 18–21, 2025 | David H. Koch Theater

The Comet / Poppea

The festival opens with the New York premiere of The Comet / Poppea, a bold new work by composer George Lewis. Directed by Yuval Sharon, this operatic fusion of Monteverdi’s The Coronation of Poppea (1642) and W.E.B. Du Bois’s apocalyptic short story The Comet (1920) explores race, power, and survival against the backdrop of cosmic disaster. The production stars AMOC* co-founders Davóne Tines and Anthony Roth Costanzo, with scenic design by Tony Award–winner Mimi Lien.

Olivier Messiaen — June 26, 2025 at 7:30pm | Alice Tully Hall

Harawi

The New York premiere of Harawi, a one-hour song cycle for voice and piano by Olivier Messiaen, features soprano Julia Bullock and pianist Conor Hanick. The production includes choreography by Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber and is directed by Zack Winokur.

Julius Eastman — June 28–29, 2025

A Power Greater Than – June 28 at 7:30pm | David Geffen Hall

The End Is Not In Sight – June 29 at 5:30pm | Josie Robertson Plaza

Curated by cellist and scholar Seth Parker Woods, this two-day tribute to Julius Eastman delves into the enduring genius of the queer, Black avant-garde composer. A Power Greater Than brings together AMOC* artists Davóne Tines, Conor Hanick, and Coleman Itzkoff with performers JIJI and Adam Tendler, alongside members of Wild Up.

The celebration continues outdoors with The End Is Not In Sight, a free performance at the Josie Robertson Plaza.

Matthew Aucoin — July 10–12, 2025 | Lincoln Center

Music for New Bodies

The festival culminates in the world premiere staging of Music for New Bodies, a “vocal symphony” by AMOC* co-founder Matthew Aucoin, directed by Peter Sellars. With a libretto drawn from the poetry of Jorie Graham, Music for New Bodies is performed by five singers and an 18-piece ensemble conducted by Aucoin. The work explores themes of climate change, mortality, and technological overreach.
