James Dillon, one of the UK's most internationally renowned composers, celebrates his 75th birthday this year. There will be several performances of his works throughout the year, including the premiere of his new guitar piece and a series of performances by Melrose Music Society.

12 Caprices, Dillon's new work for solo guitar, will be premiered by Sean Shibe at Wigmore Hall on Thursday May 29. The programme will celebrate Boulez’s centenary with a performance of Le marteau sans maître.

Shibe will then present the German premiere in the same programme on May 31 at the Elbphilharmonie, as part of the Hamburg International Music Festival.

Prefaced by Lorca's Capriccio, the miniatures offer glimpses and fleeting ideas of form and uncertainty across a total of 10-minutes:

"In the moon's web,
the sky spider,
stars are entangled,
whirling."
- Federico Garcia Lorca

The work will receive its Swedish premiere with Magnus Andersson at Östergötlands Musikdagar, Norrköping, on August 13.

Beginning on May 25, The Melrose Music Society will celebrate Dillon’s 75th with a series of concerts across 2025.

The programmes will feature performances of The Book of Elements Vol.3, Traumwerk III, String Quartet No.7, Shrouded Mirrors, echo the angelus and more, by performers Angeliki Giannopoulou (piano), Noriko Kawai (piano), Jack Hancher (guitar), the Telyn Quartet, and Mathilde Milwidsky (violin) & Richard Uttley (piano).
