Terminus - new opera by Therese Ulvo and Marit Eikemo

On May 15, 2025, The Norwegian National Opera will present the new opera Terminus by Therese Ulvo and Marit Eikemo

Commissioned by three major opera houses in Norway, The Norwegian National Opera, Trondheim Symphony Orchestra & Opera and Bergen National Opera, Terminus is a modern retelling of the Nordic classic Jeppe on the Hill (Jeppe på Bjerget) by Ludvig Holberg.

Like Jeppe, our main charachter Lola, is bamboozled into a drama in which she plays the leading role.

A pandemic has broken out and Lola is sick. One day, she wakes up in a hotel bed, healed and having no recollection of how she got to Hotel Terminus.

Terminus is about loneliness and the need for others.

What kind of responsibility do we have to each other – and what does that entail nowadays?
What exactly does it mean to be sick – or healthy?
What is real and what is staged?
These are the questions asked by Terminus, but without providing any clear answers.

Winner of the Arne Nordheim Composer Prize 2024, Ulvo is a fearless and innovative composer. Not afraid to take risks, her music dives into tradition, briging new possibilites to the surface. Novelist and journalist Marit Eikemo is best known for her articulate, socially critical and entertaining writing. Together, they bring Lola's story to life in this playful parody of our times.
