The music of Anna Thorvaldsdottir takes centre stage in the UK this month, with performances of several of the Icelandic composer’s most recent and important works, as well at the world premiere of a new ballet to her music.

New Wayne MacGregor

On June 9, The Royal Ballet presents the world premiere of Untitled, 2023, a ballet by Resident Choreographer Wayne MacGregor set to two of Thorvaldsdottir’s orchestral scores, METACOSMOS and CATAMORPHOSIS. The ballet is inspired by the untitled art works of the late Cuban-American artist Carmen Herrera, who has designed the set, and features costume design by Daniel Lee, Chief Creative Officer at Burberry, and lighting design by Lucy Carter. Performances take place from June 9 – 17.

Aldeburgh Festival 2023

Thorvaldsdottir is a Featured Artist at this year’s Aldeburgh Festival where the BBC Symphony Orchestra will present the UK Premiere of AIŌN, her most substantial orchestral work to date, on June 16. Earlier that week, the BBC Philharmonic performs METACOSMOS on June 12 and the Danish String Quartet brings one of the composer’s most recent works, Rituals, on June 13 (following its UK Premiere at London’s Wigmore Hall the previous day).
