Composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s chamber opera UR_ will have its UK premiere in a new production directed and designed by Netia Jones, Associate Director of The Royal Opera, from 27 May to 2 June 2027 at the The Royal Opera House in the Linbury Theatre. In addition to composing Ur_, Anna created the narrative, words, and phonetic textures, with title and additional text by Mette Karlsvik. The one-hour opera was commissioned in 2015 by Far North in cooperation with Theater Trier in Germany, Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival, and the Norwegian National Opera.
Anna’s music can also be heard now at the Royal Ballet in Untitled, 2023, part of Resident Choreographer Wayne McGregor’s Alchemies, through 6 May 2026. Untitled, 2023 is set to two of her orchestral scores: METACOSMOS AND CATAMORPHOSIS. The ballet is inspired by the untitled art works of the late Cuban-American artist Carmen Herrera, who has designed the set, and features costume design by Daniel Lee, Chief Creative Officer at Burberry, and lighting design by Lucy Carter.
