Klangforum Wien will premiere Doubles by Eivind Buene at Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik 2023 on a commission from Westdeutscher Rundfunk.

Buene, renowned Norwegian composer, fiction writer and professor of composition at the Norwegian Academy of Music, has written music for a wide array of European ensembles and orchestras, including the Ensemble Intercontemporain, Donaueschinger Musiktage, London Sinfonietta, and Berliner Philharmoniker.

In Doubles, tempered pitch is continuously confronted with non-tempered sound, creating a sonic world I hope can be described as 'vaguely familiar'. Or, to borrow a phrase from Shakespeare, as something rich and strange.
When I listen to acoustic instruments, I am always intrigued by this double identity. My interest in this duality is probably one of the reasons why most of my output is for instrumental ensembles. I try to always confront the 'self' of the musical instrument with its doppelgänger as sounding object.

Doubles promises to be a fascinating work that explores the duality of musical relationships and sonic events. The piece will premiere at Saalbau Witten at the Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik 2023, April 21, 2023.
