Today it was announced that acclaimed Danish composer Hans Abrahamsen has been awarded the prestigious H.C. Andersen Award 2023 for his outstanding opera The Snow Queen.

The Award committee celebrates Abrahamsen's opera as magnificent musical dramatisation of the timeless story that has enchanted readers of all ages for generations. With his congenial approach to the music, Abrahamsen has created an operatic modern masterpiece that matches the existential questions of our time and ensures that the magic and mystery of Andersen's world is still both captivating and enchanting for audiences of today.

The Award is presented in recognition of outstanding achievements in working with Hans Christian Andersen and of contributions to promoting and spreading further knowledge of the Danish national poet in many parts of the world. The award is named after the celebrated Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen, whose timeless tales have been translated into over 160 languages and continue to inspire people all over the world.

We congratulate Hans Abrahamsen on this well-deserved award and wish him continued success in his future endeavours.

The Award ceremony will take place on Sunday 2 April 2023 in Odense, the birth place of H. C. Andersen.

Abrahamsen and his exceptional opera The Snow Queen won a Gramophone Contemporary Award in 2022 for the recording by the Bayerische Staatsoper.
