Composer and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen will be a prominent artist at the Elbphilharmonie in January. As part of the events celebrating the 5th anniversary of the Elbphilharmonie, his orchestral work Wing on Wing will be performed and livestreamed on January 11 under the baton of Alan Gilbert, a piece written in 2004 for the then new Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and dedicated to its acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota, who is well known in Hamburg.

In order to illuminate the versatile musical personality in all its facets, the Elbphilharmonie is dedicating a separate "Multiversum" to Esa-Pekka Salonen over two seasons. On January 20, he will conduct the German premiere of his 2018/19 work Gemini in the first programme of the "Multiversum Esa-Pekka Salonen" focus, ". The Second Multiversum evening on January includes the German premiere of Kínēma, a concertino for clarinet and string orchestra, written in 2021 and also conducted by Salonen himself. The series will be completed on March 22 with the performance of his Cello Concerto by Junge Deutsche Philharmonie and soloist Nicolas Altstaedt under the baton of Dima Slobodeniouk.

And finally, on January 24 his music can be experienced in an informal setting in the chamber music series "übelst unverstärkt", with members of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester at the Hamburg nightclub Übel&Gefährlich. Salonen will present and discuss Homunculus, his string quartet from 2007 and the German premiere of his most recent chamber work and Saltat Sobrius : Fantasy upon Sederunt Principes from 2020.
