Chamber Music Northwest premieres the thoughtful, tragic chamber opera, A Song by Mahler by Marc Neikrug, on Tuesday July 6, 2021. Doug Fitch directs the story of a celebrated concert singer as she develops early-onset Alzheimer’s. Aided by her husband (her accompanist), music and singing help her to cope with a changed life. Neikrug created both the libretto and score.

Singers Jennifer Johnson Cano and Kelly Markgraf, clarinetist David Shifrin, and the FLUX Quartet are on stage. Performances of the compact production continue this summer and next season by the esteemed commissioning consortium: The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and the La Jolla, Lake Champlain, and Santa Fe Chamber Music Festivals.

A Song by Mahler will have its Canadian premiere at Toronto’s 21C Festival in 2022.
