Robert Binet & Missy Mazzoli | Ballett am Rhein premieres ‘Dark with Excessive Bright’

Following the great success of his premiere of "New World" at Ballett am Rhein, the young Canadian choreographer Robert Binet returns to this company: "Dark with Excessive Bright" is the title of his new piece, which will be premiered on May 20h as part of b.43 at Theater Duisburg. It is based on John Milton's legendary episode “Paradise Lost” about the fall of man. Robert Binet uses three works by the American composer Missy Mazzoli, who was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2019: Vespers, Sinfonia for Orbiting Spheres and the title-giving piece Dark with Excessive Bright.
It is the third collaboration between Robert Binet and Mazzoli: In November 2019, the full-length ballet Orpheus Alive came on stage at the National Ballet of Canada to a new Missy Mazzoli score. The Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by Finnegan Downie Dear.

Music by Stravinsky and Corigliano in new choreography by Stephan Thoss | Nationaltheater Mannheim

Music by Igor Stravinsky and John Corigliano forms the basis of the new double bill “Beschwörung – Le Sacre du Printemps” by Stephan Thoss, which premieres in Mannheim on April 30th.
Stravinsky’s milestone in ballet history “Le Sacre du Printemps” from 1913 is opposed to the percussion concerto Conjurer by the American composer John Corigliano from 2008 which unfolds rhythms of magical power. The soloist acts as a magician, who brings the other instruments to life by striking them – according to Corigliano. A delightful, intrinsic game that is also magically ignited in the choreography on stage. The Nationaltheater Orchestra plays under the direction of Jānis Liepiņš.
