John Adams

Composer, conductor, and creative thinker – John Adams occupies a unique position in the world of American music. His works, both operatic and symphonic, stand out among contemporary classical compositions for their depth of expression, brilliance of sound, and the profoundly humanist nature of their themes. Over the past 50 years, Adams’s music has played a decisive role in turning the tide of contemporary musical aesthetics away from academic modernism and toward a more expansive, expressive language, entirely characteristic of his New World surroundings.

Born and raised in New England, Adams learned the clarinet from his father and played in marching bands and community orchestras during his formative years. He began composing at age ten and heard his first orchestral pieces performed while still a teenager. Adams's student years at Harvard took place during the chaotic and transformative period of the Vietnam War, the era of psychedelic drugs and the blossoming of rock, soul and jazz. In 1971 he moved to Northern California where he has lived ever since.

The history, culture and landscape of California have affected Adams profoundly and have shaped his creative voice. Works such as The Dharma at Big Sur, Road Movies, City Noir and his Gold Rush opera Girls of the Golden West reflect his deep connection to the the West Coast. Adams has in turn had an impact on the musical culture of his adopted state, with longstanding relationships to both the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the San Francisco Symphony as well as to the San Francisco Opera. San Francisco Symphony premiered seven Adams works, including Harmonium (1982), Harmonielehre (1985) and Absolute Jest (2012). The Los Angeles Philharmonic has performed his music over 200 times.

Adams’s stage works, most done in collaboration with director Peter Sellars, have resulted in more than three decades of ground breaking operas and oratorios: Nixon in China (1987), The Death of Klinghoffer (1991), both to libretti by Alice Goodman, El Niño (2000), Doctor Atomic (2005), A Flowering Tree (2006), The Gospel According to the Other Mary (2012) and Girls of the Golden West (2017). Antony and Cleopatra (2022), with a libretto adapted by the composer from Shakespeare and Virgil, opened the centennial season of the San Francisco Opera. It was the third Adams opera to be premiered by that company after Doctor Atomic (2025) and Girls of the Golden West (2017).

Of his first opera, The New Yorker Magazine said, “Not since Porgy and Bess has an American opera won such universal acclaim as Nixon in China.” A 2023 New York Times Arts & Leisure cover story called Adams “arguably our greatest living composer.”

Adams has received numerous Grammy awards, many of them for his over thirty releases on Nonesuch Records. To celebrate his 75th birthday Nonesuch Records released its “John Adams Collected Works,” a 40-CD box covering his entire output since 1973.

Recent works include Frenzy: a short symphony, written for Simon Rattle; The Rock You Stand On, a 10-minute orchestra piece dedicated to Marin Alsop; Iron Jig for string quartet; and Visions fugitives, a set of seven pieces for piano. Adams is currently at work on a work for strings for the Australian Chamber Orchestra.

The Death of Klinghoffer, Adams's 1991 opera about the murder of a disabled Jewish American, Leon Klinghoffer, by Palestinian hijackers, was presented in an April 2026 production, directed by Luca Guadagnino at Maggio Musicale in Florence. Two new productions of Doctor Atomic are scheduled for 2027, one in Munich directed by Claus Guth and another at Zurich Opera, directed by Vanessa Beecroft. Nixon in China, in a production by Valentina Carasco and featuring Renée Fleming and Thomas Hampson, reprised in Paris in March 2026, conducted by Kent Nagano. The Washington National Opera will present Nixon in China in a production by Elkhanah Pulitzer and featuring Fleming and Hampson in November of 2026.

Adams was the recipient of the 2019 Erasmus Prize, awarded to him by the King of the Netherlands “for contributions to European culture.” In the same year he was also chosen for the coveted BBVA Frontiers of Knowledge award. Both Harvard and Yale universities have conferred honorary doctorates on Adams, as have Northwestern University, the Juilliard School, the San Francisco Conservatory and Cambridge University. His Violin Concerto won the 1993 Grawemeyer Award, and On the Transmigration of Souls, commissioned by the New York Philharmonic to commemorate the first anniversary of 9/11, received the 2003 Pulitzer Prize in Music. In 2021 He was named Accademico Onorario of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Italy’s most prestigious music honor.

John Adams is a much sought-after conductor, appearing with the world’s major orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, the Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Chicago Symphony, and the Metropolitan Opera. He is a frequent guest conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra, an ensemble with which he enjoys a thirty-year history. Adams’s programming combines his own works with a wide variety of repertoire ranging from Mozart and Beethoven to Debussy, Ives, Stravinsky, Carter, Glass, and Ellington.

The Metropolitan Opera has produced five of Adams’s stage works making him the most performed living composer in the company’s repertoire.

A new Nonesuch release of Adams’s 2017 Gold Rush opera, Girls of the Golden West, with the composer conducting the Los Angeles Philharmonic was a Grammy nominee for “Best Opera” recording in 2024. In March of 2024 Sir Simon Rattle conducted Adams’s the premiere of Frenzy: a short symphony with the London Symphony Orchestra.

Conducting appearances in the coming season include the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, a European tour with the London Symphony Orchestra, an 80th birthday celebration with the New York Philharmonic and the concerts in Vienna and Prague with the Vienna Philharmonic.

Through his conducting and commissioning of new works, Adams has become a significant mentor of the younger generation of American composers. The Pacific Harmony Foundation, created with his wife, the photographer Deborah O’Grady, supports commissions and performances of new works and musical education initiatives throughout the country. Adams’ educational activities reach from the local (the John Adams Young Composers program in his hometown of Berkeley, California) to the national and international (the Juilliard School, the Royal Academy of Music, the New World Symphony and the Berliner Phiharmoniker Akadamie). As an advocate of young composers, Adams has conducted over 100 premieres of new works over the course of his career. He received the 2021 Ditson Conductor’s Award from Columbia University in recognition for his “exceptional commitment to American composers.” He has twice served as Music Director of the Ojai Festival.

John Adams is also a highly esteemed and provocative writer. He is a frequent contributor to the New York Times Book Review and has written for The New Yorker and The London Times. Hallelujah Junction, Adams’s much praised volume of memoirs and commentary on American musical life, won the Northern California Book Award for Creative Nonfiction and was named one of the “most notable books of the year” by The New York Times.
