Programme Note

For his quintet's title, George Lewis looked to the work of Anton Wilhelm Amo, an 18th-century African slave who became a Ph.D. of philosophy and taught at the European universities of Halle and Jena. Amo wrote that the body, not the mind, has the 'faculty of sensing.'
