Programme Note

Church organist and choirmaster Samuel A. Ward set the lyrics of "Materna" to music in 1882 at Grace Episcopal Church in Newark, NJ. Inspired by the view of the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains from atop Pike's Peak, Katharine Lee Bates wrote the poem "Pikes Peak" in 1893 and published it as "America." Though Bates and Ward never met, her poem and his music joined together in 1910 to become "America the Beautiful," perhaps the country's most beloved patriotic song.
