Programme Note
In 1965, Ellington was invited to present a concert of sacred music at San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral as part of a year-long celebration of its completion. Mixing newly composed and re-worked material from earlier in his career, Ellington put together a “lyrical sermon” that he regarded as the most important music he ever created. Over the course of 1965 to 1973, Ellington put together two more such programs to create the Second and Third Sacred Concerts. This adaption by Charles Floyd (premiered by the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2022) presents selected songs from these landmark performances in symphonic form.
