Programme Note

To mark the centenary of the great jazz trumpeter Miles Davis, jazz musician Sebastian Studnitzky and conductor and composer Fabrice Bollon are bringing a joint tribute to the stage.

The title refers to the Grammy-winning album Aura on the one hand and to the extraordinary musical personality of Miles Davis on the other, whose sheer boundless curiosity enabled him to immerse himself in every musical style. His ingenious ability to form special and unmistakable phrases has characterised his music, which is still incomparable today.

Both Studnitzky and Bollon transcend the rigid boundaries of genres in their music and – like Miles Davis – compose works that embrace today's musical environment in all its diversity. For this project, Fabrice Bollon (awarded Diapason d'or, Choc de Classica, Grammophone editor's choice, among others) has composed a 45-minute work for solo jazz trumpet and orchestra.  The starting point here is: How does a classical composer integrate an improvising jazz trumpeter into the fabric of an orchestra?

Fabrice Bollon's work not only reflects the work of an icon like Miles Davis, but also poses the question of how strongly this work has influenced and will influence his own musical expression and composition.
