Programme Note

Cassation dates from 1979 and is for the usual octet of woodwind and horns. However, the second oboe doubles cor anglais, the clarinets double bass clarinet, Eb clarinet and soprano saxophone and the second horn is asked to play the maracas at one point. The first movement is a march with contrasting tempi, then comes a Scherzino, a movement marked Ebb & Flow, Alla Tanza, Fughetta and Finale. In between these movements there are verses of a chorale and the finale contains reminiscences of all the previous movements.
