Programme Note
From where I see the Sun dive into the Ocean is inspired by the experience of inner connectedness across the globe, memories and belonging, across distances, nature, climate and cultures. This inspiration came from the personal experience of being connected to more places and cultures, simultaneously, that I recognize from my own life as both an American and Danish citizen, as well as the dialogue I have had with percussionist Christian Martínez about his professional and personal connection to the West Coast of Denmark, where he lives and works, and the West Coast of Colombia, South America, where he was born and grew up.
Both places and countries are unique - and both have a coast facing West. This fact makes certain phenomena occur both places and hereby connect the places deeply through nature and the rhythm of each day.
This is something I deeply resonate with myself, since my sister and her family always has lived in San Diego, USA, close to the coastline of the Pacific Ocean – every time I experience a sunset over an open ocean horizon – I am deeply connected to this place and my family far away.
Specifically, this piece focus on the inspiration of the West Coast of South America and the West Coast of Denmark – and the piece is written in 6 movements that take inspiration from general natural phenomena such as the Ocean Horizon, and the Sunset as well as the Ocean Wind of a West Coast facing an ocean.
Also, with local inspiration such as the phenomenon of large flocks of birds that gather on the West Coast of among others Denmark (Sort Sol) and the forests on the West Coast of Colombia such as Utria National Park, with the sounds of wood and organic rhythmic patterns (The Nature). The last movement is a piece inspired by the spirits, the memories, the ancestors, of each place (The Spirits).
