Programme Note
Daniel Grabois of the Meridian Arts Ensemble likened the balance in George Lewis’ brass quintet Tightrope between “smooth like an ice cube or crunchy like a nut mix.” A collaboration between seven institutions, schools, and ensembles, the Resonate Project explored the African Diaspora through commissions of contemporary American composers. In April 2024, the Western Brass Quintet premiered Lewis’ Tightrope in Detroit, Michigan, the final piece of the cycle.
