Programme Note

This setting of Dashing Through The Snow is a more straightforward version of the popular seasonal song (see Ben’s eight-part version written for The Swingle Singers) for choirs who don’t wish to be challenged too much! It was arranged at the request of the National Youth Choir (of which Ben was Artistic Director 2012-2023) for their annual Christmas concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, London every December since 2017. The key structure follows the original version, but is here reduced to five parts and with an absence of too many changes of metre.

The recording was sung by the National Youth Choir in July 2021, conducted by the composer, and was first performed at the Royal Albert Hall, London in December 2021, conducted by Joanna Tomlinson.

Jingle jangle, Jingle jangle, jingle all the way, hey!

Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh, yeah
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh

Dashing through the snow
In a one-horse open sleigh
O'er the fields we go
Laughing all the way
Bells on bobtails ring
Making spirits bright
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight

James Lord Pierpont 1857
