Programme Note

Carillon Ritual was originally written for toy piano at the request of Rodney Lister who gave the first performance in a concert at Boston University in April 2007. The piece juxtaposes different block of material inspired by bell sounds; these build to a climax after which fragments of fragile melody are heard.

In 2008 I arranged the piece for (predominantly) metal percussion (the marimba provides the exception). In this form the work was premiered at Manchester University on 28 February 2008 and is dedicated to the memory of my sister-in-law, Anne Hemming, who died in a tragic road accident in 2006.
