Finding (2008)

This setting was composed at the invitation of the RVW Trust, for a memorial concert for Ursula Vaughan Williams at the Royal College of Music, October 3rd, 2008.

I was lucky enough to know Ursula for over forty years, and she was a special friend to me when I was growing up. I remember long summer evenings, such as she describes, in my parents’ beautiful garden, which she loved to visit.

I think of this song as a Nocturne, in memoriam. My allusions to RVW’s music are intentional.
