Psalm 122
(I Was Glad When They Said Unto Me)

This unaccompanied setting of PSALM 122 “I was glad when they said unto me” for SATB choir (with no divisi) was commissioned at the request of the Very Revd Mark Bonney, Dean of Ely Cathedral, for his father John Bonney, and first performed on 23rd October 2016 by Sing Aotearoa (New Zealand Choral Federation) Kokako Singers, directed by the composer, in Rotorua, NZ. John Bonney was the composer’s primary school head teacher and a lover of Anglican choral music. It seems appropriate that Ben should write his own setting of this famous psalm – not that he is comparing himself in any way with the other Parry (no relation)!
