Let’s Dance for percussion solo (untuned and tuned) was commissioned by the Bulgarian percussionist Daniella Ganeva in 1996. It was premiered by her that year at the DelaWarr Pavilion, in Bexhill-on-Sea, England. It has three sections – the outer fast ones being for untuned (woods, skins and metals) and the inner one for tuned – marimba and glockenspiel. The final section concludes with some vocal exhortations from the performer to begin the dance.

Programme Note

Let’s Dance for percussion solo (untuned and tuned) was commissioned by the Bulgarian percussionist Daniella Ganeva in 1996. It was premiered by her that year at the DelaWarr Pavilion, in Bexhill-on-Sea, England.

The piece lasts around 5’ and is in three parts, marked Confident, Floating and Driving. The first and last parts are driving, rhythmically active and scored for unpitched woods, skins and metals (drums, cymbals etc). The middle, slower part features tuned instruments – glockenspiel and marimba – before the sound world of the first section returns with renewed force. This final section has echoes of a Bulgarian wedding, and its ending includes from the player the exhortations “Vse Dozhny Tantsevatz!” (Everyone must dance!) and “Davveye Tantsooyem” (Let’s Dance!).
