Programme Note

Outlier (2018) is a work for solo viola that takes on the identity of an escaping cell – an outlier – meticulously tracing its intricate motions and trajectories. At times resembling an intimate close-up observed through a microscope and at others, a distant yet powerful surge of frenzied activity, the piece is a relentless journey, both virtuosic and intense. In this way it perhaps touches upon something of the profound impact of cancer, encapsulating both its devastating effects and the resilience demanded to confront it.

The work grew out of a series of conversations with mathematician Rachel Bearon and biologist Violaine See about their joint research modelling the migration of brain tumour cells supported by the Liverpool Centre in Mathematics for Healthcare.
