Programme Note
Composer note
The refrain and the tune are found in 17th-century sources. The words of the refrain were used, for example, in the 1665 edition of John Playford's Dancing Master. This was a song of the London 'Waits,' originally nightwatchmen who developed into singing bands. These Christmas verses were written by George Ratcliffe Woodward (1848-1934), a Walsingham vicar, who compiled The Cowley Book(s) of Carols, 1902/1912, and wrote the words to 'Ding, dong, merrily on high'.
