Programme Note

On 16 October 2003, Sergei Prokofiev’s 1938 film score to Sergei Eisenstein’s masterpiece Alexander Nevsky was performed live in concert, with the film, at the Berlin Konzerthaus. This screening featured the first performance of a score reconstructed by Frank Strobel. Based on extensive analysis of the film’s soundtrack and examination of the composer’s manuscript, short score and sketches, the new reconstruction reliably reproduces Prokofiev’s original scoring for the film.

Reviews

Sergei Eisenstein’s 1938 epic, “Alexander Nevsky,” [is a] landmark of Russian cinema [and] was a joint project between the director and Prokofiev....Though this 110-minute film has many scenes with spoken dialogue, in long stretches Prokofiev’s moody and gripping score accompanies silent scenes of landscapes, street life in medieval Russian cities and the climactic cast-of-thousands battle sequence…it was a thrill to experience the music....Prokofiev taps into the bleakness of the story with muted and pensive music....The film itself is stunning...
