Programme Note
Composed in 1952, Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Major, Op. 50, subtitled Youth Concerto, was written for young pianists and dedicated to the youth of the Soviet Union. It forms the final work in a trilogy of concertos for young performers, following the Violin Concerto No. 1, Op. 48 (1948) and the Cello Concerto No. 1, Op. 49 (1949). The concerto received its premiere in Moscow in 1953, with the fifteen-year-old Vladimir Ashkenazy as soloist and the composer conducting.
Lasting around twenty minutes, the work combines lyrical melodies with rhythmic vitality and folk-inspired elements while remaining technically accessible for advanced young performers. Conceived as an introduction to the concerto repertoire, it balances expressive writing with moderate technical demands, reflecting Kabalevsky's commitment to creating substantial works for developing musicians. Today, it remains one of his most frequently performed orchestral works and continues to occupy an important place in the educational piano repertoire.
