Programme Note

This piece for trombone and tape is a development and enlargement of the musical material which I discovered was living inside the instrument when I co-operated with the brilliant trombone player, Per Brevig, during the writing of The Hunting of the Snark. During this co-operation, we uncovered some possibilities which seemed very difficult, even impossible, to put into practice.

Then I brought all the fragmentary material which we had recovered during the working of The Hunting of the Snark to an electronic studio. There I continued the research into the fascinating sound material which had been provided by Per Brevig many years earlier. The instrument's range could, by electronic means, be enlarged and we could make audible notes which, in real life, are weak or difficult to hear. After this I co-ordinated and synthesised this process with the trombone live. So, after many years and many detours, the Snark is returning from whence it came, the States and Per.
