Programme Note
This is the second version of Surya, the first being for five soloists and an unaccompanied chorus of forty-eight. It was written in December 1970 at the request of the Society for the Promotion of New Music. An Arts Council bursary made it possible to write this work, amongst others.
The two verses, a 'Shloke' from Abhijnan Shakuntlam by Kalidas and a 'Mantra' from Rig Veda, are in praise of Surya (the sun). The setting envisaged is a flowing river in which people stand singing the verses as the sun rises.
The language used is Sanskrit and the script Dev Nagri. In addition, a phonetic transliteration into roman text is given.
