The Theatre of Magical Beings

The Theatre of Magical Beings
The world premiere of Param Vir’s new commission for the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, The Theatre of Magical Beings, will take place on May 6th at the CBSO Centre in Birmingham. The BCMG, conducted by Susanna Malkki, will then take this work on tour to Manchester (May 7th, the RNCM Concert Hall), Durham (May 8th, Gala Theatre), York (Jack Lyons Concert Hall, York University), Shropshire (May 10th, Christchurch, Bayston Hill) and Oxford (May 11th, St Edward’s School).

The Theatre of Magical Beings is about Mythical beasts – fantastical musical images of Garuda – half man half bird; Uroborus – a serpent devouring its own tail; Simurgh, the immortal bird that nests in the branches of the Tree of Knowledge; and a fabulous six-tusked white elephant who foretold the Birth of the Buddha.
