Honorary Doctorate for Arnold

Now in his eighty-fifth year, Sir Malcolm was born and grew up in Northampton before winning a scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London at the age of sixteen. In his encomium of the composer, the Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Peter Bush described Arnold as “without doubt one of the most versatile, prolific and fluent composers of the 20th century”. Later this year, a festival devoted to Arnold’s music will be held at the Royal & Derngate Theatres in Northampton. The Arnold Festival will take place from October 20-22 and will include a Concerto Day featuring some of the UK’s most talented young musicians. The weekend will close with a gala concert by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
