Anna Thorvaldsdottir, 2026/2027 Bozar’s resident composer

Anna Thorvaldsdottir will be the composer in residence at Bozar for the 2026/2027 season. The residency will place Thorvaldsdottir’s music at the heart of Bozar’s programme with seven concerts programmed throughout the season, including two country premieres. The Belgian National Orchestra will perform four of her major works, while her delicate chamber music will be entrusted to the Het Collectief and the Quatuor Diotima.

Her residency will be opened on Friday 11Th of September with the performance of AERIALITY by the Belgian National Orchestra, conducted by Matthew Halls at Bozar.

One of the key concerts of the season is the country premiere of CATAMORPHOSIS. The core inspiration behind it is the fragile relationship we have to our planet. The core of the work revolves around a distinct sense of urgency, driven by the shift and pull between various polar forces – power and fragility, hope and despair, preservation and destruction. The premiere takes place on Friday, 4th of December at 20:00 at Bozar, performed by the Belgian National Orchestra, conducted by Eva Ollikainen.  In this programme, Hans Abrahamsen’s work Vers le Silence will also receive its Belgian premiere.

To bring her residency to a close, the cello concerto Before We Fall will receive its country premiere on Friday, 28th of May at 20:00 at Bozar, performed by the cellist Julian Steckel, with the Belgian National Orchestra conducted by Michael Schønwandt. The core inspiration centres around the notion of teetering on the edge, of balancing on the verge of a multitude of opposites. The cello, both alone and deeply connected to the orchestral elements in its expression, generates the atmospheric progression of the world it inhabits, yet continuously on the verge of falling outside the reality it is building for itself.
