This week, composer Sally Beamish celebrates her 70th birthday, an occasion being marked by BBC Radio 3, which has dedicated its flagship Composer of the Week series to her life and music.
Across five programmes, presenter Donald Macleod joins Beamish at her home on England’s south coast to reflect on her remarkable career as a composer and performer, tracing her musical journey from a childhood immersed in music in post-war Islington to her position today as one of Britain’s most distinctive and widely performed composers.
The series features a range of Beamish’s music, including April, Crescent, The Wiser Maid, Gerropaedie and Partita, alongside personal reflections on the experiences and influences that have shaped her creative life.
