From June 25 to 28 the Saxonian bath Gohrisch is hosting the 17th International Schostakowitsch Days, focusing on the influence of Jewish music on Schostakowitsch’s work. The festival in Gohrisch, where Schostakowitsch composed two of his most important works, presents an intriguing program including works by Gustav Mahler, Mieczysław Weinberg and Lev Moiseyevich Abeliovich.

While the works of Mahler and Weinberg are well known, Abeliovich’s oeuvre has just been rediscovered. Abeliovich was a close friend of Mieczysław Weinberg and Dmitri Schostakowitsch, as well as a student of Nikolai Myaskovsky at the Moscow Conservatory. His catalogue, characterised by deep expressiveness, is considered a unique testimony to an artistically lost generation.

At the chamber matinée on June 27, Elli Choi (violin), Nils Mönkemeyer (viola), Friedrich Thiele (cello) and Rostislav Krimer (piano) present the European premiers of Abeliovich’s works Aria for viola and piano, Piano Sonata No. 2 and Trio for Violin, Cello and Piano.

You are warmly invited to find out more about this year’s festival at International Schostakowitsch Days Gohrisch.
