On Thursday March 12, The Hallé and soloist Tine Thing Helseth will give the UK premiere of Nico Muhly's trumpet concerto, Doom Painting. Alpesh Chauhan will conduct the performance at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall, in a programme that also includes works by Benjamin Britten and William Walton. The performance is repeated on Sunday March 15 at Sheffield City Hall.

Written for the Norwegian trumpet soloist Tine Thing Helseth, Doom Painting engages with the history, both real and symbolic, of trumpets in the bible, from its use as a ceremonial object for processions, sacrifices, and rituals, through to a joyful tour of the trumpet’s role in the psalms. In this piece, Muhly explores the trumpet’s expressive possibilities as an ancient instrument, predating most other instruments in the modern orchestra.
